SQL Server Meeting in Orange County

SQL Server Clustering 101

In this session we will cover the basics and delve into the advanced techniques which can be used to cluster Windows servers using the Windows Cluster Service, what sort of protection this provides you, and how to properly set up your clusters for a rock solid environment which will last you for many years to come. We will start with planning our cluster configuration, selecting our software, and walk through the process of clustering two servers together into an active passive cluster. We will cover the differences between a standalone machine and clusters with regard to licensing and multiple instance configurations.

DBCC Commands in SQL Server 2005 and SQL Server 2008

Presented by: Dave Owen

Dave has, among other credits, a Microsoft Certified Trainer credential.  In reviewing the Microsoft Official Curriculum for course 2789A, Administering and Automating Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Databases and Servers, he came across this passage:

Important DBCC commands are familiar to most DBAs but you should check the topics “DBCC (Transact-SQL)” and “Check Database Integrity Task” for the SQL Server 2005 thinking on these tools.  The emphasis is changing to a heavier reliance on the automatic tasks.  Also notice in topics such as “DBCC INDEXDEFRAG (Transact-SQL)” that a number of DBCC commands will be removed in future versions of SQL Server.  Ensure that your automation does not rely on commands or features that will eventually disappear from the product.

This caused him to ask:  what is the role of DBCC commands both in SQL Server 2005 and SQL Server 2008?  He will share the results of this answer with us during the March meeting.

2. SQLSIG_DBCC_Handout_March08.doc is a table of all known DBCCs from the beginning of time and their current status in SQL Server 2000, SQL Server 2005 and SQL Server 2008. Keep in mind that this truth is as of the February Community Technology Preview release. It has not been updated.

3. SQLSIG_DBCC_Samples_March08.txt provides the SQL code samples.
